PROPERTY TAXES

The Florida House-Senate committee negotiating a compromise agreement on property tax reform met yesterday. So far, three separate plans appear possible, each with advantages and disadvantages. All plans, however, grant some kind of tax exemption based on a percentage of the property’s value.

Cooper's quest: Turn 20-acre boulevard in PSL into botanical garden

A man who grows oaks from acorns knows about patience. Councilman Christopher Cooper is that sort of man. For years, Cooper has spearheaded a plan to transform into a botanical garden 20 tree-strewn acres between Westmoreland Boulevard and the North Fork of the St. Lucie River.

Newsweek ranks LPA 43rd best U.S. Public High School

FORT PIERCE — It's a ranking that could explain why infants are on its waiting list.

As in 2003, when it was ranked 22nd, Lincoln Park Academy is one of the 50 best schools in the country, according to a study done by Newsweek magazine. The Fort Pierce magnet school ranked 43rd on a survey of the 1,200 best high schools.
